Be Careful of Medication and Dental Side Effects

Posted on 3/10/2015 by Fady Ebid
Medication often has dental side effects. As you know, many adults take medication to treat various conditions. Each of these medications has their own list of side effects; but what you may not know is that these medications actually have dental side effects. Here are the most common medications presenting with dental-related side effects.

Aspirin - Studies have shown that patients who take aspirin regularly by chewing them actually erode the tooth enamel and subsequently damage their teeth. Aspirin can also cause excess bleeding and even clotting problems during dental procedures.

Antihistamines in prescription strength (azelastine, hydroxyzine, etc.) and over-the-counter medications (Claritin, Zyrtec, Benadryl and so on) decrease the production of saliva. Since saliva benefits both teeth and gums, without it teeth are more susceptible to decay and gums to infection.

Blood pressure medications, chemotherapy, immunosuppressive drugs and oral contraceptives are known to cause inflammation of the gums including sores.

Coumadin is a blood thinner that can cause excessive bleeding even during a normal cleaning, making it import to keep your dentist apprised of all your medications.

Heparin, Warfarin and other anti-coagulants can also cause abnormal bleeding during dental procedures.

Immunosuppressants, calcium channel blockers, and anti-seizure medications can cause a condition known as gingival hyperplasia or gum tissue overgrowth. The problem can be helped with excellent oral hygiene, but the gum overgrowth can make it hard to maintain.

Tetracycline can cause staining of the teeth, especially during the developmental stages.

It is important to let our office know what medications you are taking as well as when changes are made in your medications so that we can always provide you with the best possible care. Have a question? Give us a call!
