Is There a Dental Health - Dementia Connection?

Posted on 3/24/2015 by Fady Ebid
There may be a correlation between dental health and dementia In a study done in 2007, a correlation was revealed between the loss of teeth in those under the age of 35, and the occurrence of dementia in old age. Though the study did not reach any conclusions as a result, it sparked further studies into the connection between dental health and dementia.

A recently released study showed that senior adults who brushed failed to brush their teeth daily were 65 percent more liable to develop dementia later in life than those who brushed and flossed every day. The study was performed over 18 years and included 5,500 participants who had not been diagnosed with dementia when the study began.

Other studies support these findings. Those with Alzheimer's disease have been found to have higher levels of gum disease causing bacteria in their brains than those without the disease. Early theories believe that this bacteria actually may be causing inflammation in the brain, leading to symptoms of poor memory and confusion potentially resulting in brain damage and dementia.

Of course, these studies do not prove that dementia is caused by poor dental health, or that by brushing and flossing you can prevent dementia; but it might indicate that poor dental health habits may be an early sign of dementia. Researchers feel that there might be a connection between behavior and dementia and further study is needed in this area. There are still more questions than answers, but these studies indicate a connection, though it may be a consequence rather than a cause.
