Why is a Dry Mouth Bad?

Posted on 8/10/2015 by Fady Ebid
A man suffering from a persistent dry mouth. If you have a chronic dry mouth, do you ever worry that it might not be good for your health? That constant dry feeling or the constant need to drink means that your body is not producing enough saliva. When this occurs, your oral health is at risk as it depends on proper saliva production to stay healthy.

What does Saliva Do?

Your saliva helps to wash the bacteria and food debris away from your teeth. Have you ever noticed that when you eat a full meal your body produces more saliva? That is your brain's way of helping your mouth get rid of the bacteria. This is your first line of defense against tooth decay and gum disease, of which brushing and flossing is the second line of defense. But when you don't have that saliva, your mouth is not getting cleansed, which means the bacteria resides there until you brush your teeth, which could be many hours later.

Ways to Prevent Dry Mouth

If you were recently put on medication and are experiencing a dry mouth, chances are the medication is the cause. Talk to your doctor about your other options. If it is not medication, a dry mouth could be caused by hormone imbalances, certain illnesses, or dehydration. Do your best to drink plenty of water all day, brush your teeth twice a day, and avoid grazing on snacks all day long. This will help to keep your saliva production up and your risk of tooth decay and gum disease down.
