Flossing and Bad Breath - What's the Connection?

Posted on 9/20/2015 by Fady Ebid
A woman suffering from chronic bad breath. There is a connection between flossing and bad breath; if you do not floss, you run a higher risk of having bad breath. What could flossing have to do with your breath? Wouldn't mouthwash be a better thing to use when you are suffering from halitosis? The answer is no! Mouthwash might mask your bad breath for an hour or so, but it will not cure it. If you want the smelly breath to go away once and for all, you need to get rid of the debris that is in between your teeth that is causing the odor.

How Food Debris Causes Bad Breath

It might seem strange that small pieces of food could have that much of an impact on your breath, but it can. Those small pieces of food might seem harmless, but when they are left to sit, they turn into bacteria. This bacteria then gives off the odor that you despise and are trying to mask.

Flossing is Essential

Generally, flossing at night before you brush your teeth is the most beneficial because it gets rid of all of the food debris from the entire day. If you are worried about bad breath, however, you can floss whenever you think it is most necessary. Some people find it best to floss upon waking as that is when their mouth is producing the least amount of saliva, which means the bacteria are thriving in their mouth, giving the bad breath.
