Two Simple Ways to Save Your Smile

Don't you want a smile that you can be proud to show off? Sometimes fixing that smile does not take any dental procedures at all - it simply requires you to lead the proper lifestyle. There are two habits that could be wreaking havoc on your smile, making it impossible to love: smoking and drinking soda.

Simply stopping these two habits can help to improve your smile over time either on their own or in conjunction with a non-invasive dental procedure.

Smoking and its Damages

Smoking is terrible for your teeth - plain and simple. It puts you at risk for tooth discoloration, tooth decay, and gum disease. Each of these issues can be detrimental to your smile. The tobacco and nicotine in the cigarettes are what is responsible for the yellowing of your teeth. This can happen rather quickly, sometimes even causing your teeth to turn brown as a result of chronic smoking. The tobacco and nicotine in the cigarettes also allow for plaque and bacteria buildup that are hard to remove on your own. Even if you brush your teeth often, the plaque and bacteria will continue to build up, putting your teeth at risk for becoming weakened, meaning a higher risk of tooth decay and gum disease.

Aside from yellowing teeth, what damage could smoking do to your smile? The effects of tooth decay and gum disease are numerous. If they are left untreated, they could both leave you with missing teeth - which what could be more embarrassing for your smile? Even without the risk of missing teeth, gum disease can cause recessed gums, which makes your teeth look longer and many smiles look odd or even funny. These are risks you can prevent simply by quitting smoking.

Drinking Soda and its Damages

Drinking soda can be detrimental to your smile too! The dark pigments in the drink work hard to destroy your smile. If you drink soda several times a day, that multiplies the amount of damage that it can cause to your smile. Not only can soda damage the appearance of your teeth, but it too can cause tooth decay. In fact, if you drink regular soda, as opposed to diet, the sugar and acid in the drink combine to wreak havoc on your teeth. Excessive tooth decay can lead to the need for root canals and eventual dental crowns as a way to replace the damaged enamel that resulted from your soda habit. Dental crowns can be aesthetically pleasing, but they are not your natural teeth, which means they can make any person self-conscious about their smile.

If you drink a lot of soda, try cutting down a little at a time. Because most sodas contain caffeine, it can be hard to quit them cold turkey. By slowly cutting down and replacing it with water, you can greatly enhance your smile, not to mention your oral health! The same is true for quitting smoking - you may even need professional help to quit, but the ability to quit can save your smile and your physical health.
