However, some people have either never gotten in the habits they should to maintain their oral health, or fallen out of those good habits. If that is true for you, then you need to start over as an adult.
How to Create the Right Dental HabitsYou need to set a schedule for the first month. Each day at two specific times, you must brush your teeth. These times should be about 12 hours apart, or close to it.
One of those times, you also need to floss. Your dentist will be able to tell you if you should use mouthwash both times, or just one as it is different for some people. Depending on what you are told, add this into the schedule as well.
It takes people anywhere from 14 to 28 days to form a new habit that they will include in their daily life. That is why you need to set this schedule up for a month. If you can, go in and see your dentist at the end of that month and explain to him or her what you have been doing. Have an exam and let them point out any place you may be missing so you can adjust now instead of down the line.
It isn't impossible to start a new habit as an adult, but it does need to be deliberately done. You cannot wake up one morning and expect your teeth to be better if you have not been taking care of them. Set up a schedule and make sure you stick to it. Your teeth should be your top priority during that month to make sure those times stick.
