Common Brushing Mistakes Most Adults Make

Posted on 2/20/2017 by Fady Ebid
A woman brushing her teeth incorrectly.
You're wondering about this topic, right. You're thinking you've been brushing your teeth since you were a child what could you possibly be doing wrong. You're probably also thinking that this article can't be referring to your habits. Well, read on and see for yourself if this pertains to you. If it doesn't you may know someone you can pass it along to.

How Can There Be Mistakes?

One thing is important to note before the list begins. What you were taught as a child was correct based on the knowledge that was available at the time. But research has continued through the years and the results of that research shows that some of what was considered absolute fact is now relegated to the land of old ideas.

What Are These Mistakes?
First of all, there is such a thing as brushing too much. You were most likely told that you should brush your teeth three times a day after every meal. Today the rule is that you should brush a minimum of two times a day and a maximum of three.

The next problem is that you don't brush long enough. You should brush your teeth for two minutes each time you brush. Short of getting a bathroom timer you could hum a song that lasts two minutes.

Another mistake adults make when they are brushing is that they brush too hard. You don't have to scrub your teeth as you would the kitchen floor. Just a soft action that lasts two minutes should sufficiently clean your teeth.

The next problem area is which teeth you choose to brush. You aren't brushing your teeth so that you have a great smile you are brushing your teeth so that you can remove errant food particles and plaque from your teeth. Brush all of your teeth, front and back and sides.

If you aren't sure about your teeth brushing habits, contact our office the next time you have an appointment.
