Afflicted with Dry Mouth?

Woman covering her mouth because of dryness - Dentist Marietta, GAIs a dry mouth something to be concerned about? If it is a chronic issue for you, it could be a sign of something more serious. A dry mouth (xerostomia) on its own is not a particular disease or illness, but is usually a symptom of an ailment or a side effect of a medication. Upwards of over 300 medications can cause dry mouth by decreasing salivary flow. In other cases it is a sign of a disease, such as Sjogren's syndrome, diabetes, lupus or in rare cases, cancer. It can also be a symptom of dehydration, stress or depression.

How a Dry Mouth Affects your Teeth

A dry mouth can be very bothersome or even uncomfortable to deal with on a daily basis, but it can also wreak havoc on your teeth. Your saliva plays a large role in ridding the bacteria from your mouth; it washes the particles of food away and helps to neutralize bacteria. It helps to keep disease at bay and the minerals in your saliva even helps to fight tooth decay.

Signs of a Dry Mouth

The obvious sign of a mouth that is low on saliva production is the feeling of dryness that you are bothered by every day. A few other signs of a dry mouth include:

•  Chronic sore throat
•  Trouble swallowing
•  Hoarse voice
•  Dry nose

If you suffer from the symptoms of dry mouth, it is important to seek medical attention to find out why it is occurring to try to rectify the problem in order to keep your teeth and mouth healthy.
