Diabetes and Gum Disease
If you have diabetes, it is likely that you have other concerns such as the health of your gums. When your body stops being able to process glucose, you are left with high levels of blood sugar in your system, which can result in gum disease. Gum disease occurs because the glucose settles in your saliva, allowing plaque and bacteria to build up in your mouth. People with diabetes sometimes have a harder time keeping their gum disease under control, so it is important to understand what you can do to help yourself.

Caring for Your Gums

There are several ways that you can reduce your risks of suffering from gum disease, even if you have diabetes:

•  Keep a close eye on your blood sugar levels to avoid a spike in your levels and increase your risks
•  Choose healthy foods to eat, including plenty of fruits and vegetables
•  Stay hydrated by drinking plenty of water
•  Brush your teeth after every time that you eat
•  Floss at least once a day
•  Make sure to brush in circular motions with a soft bristled toothbrush
•  Take care to gently brush your gums
•  Change your toothbrush every 3 months or sooner if it wears out

When you pay careful attention to your habits and your diet, you can lower your chance of getting gum disease while you have diabetes. It is important that you stay in close contact with your dentist and your doctor to ensure that your blood sugar levels are staying steady, and that your risk of gum disease is not elevated as a result.
