Do you Give Yourself Dental Check Ups?
Even if you get regular dental checkups every six months, it is important to give yourself a dental checkup. It only takes a minute and could help you to keep your mouth healthier in the long run. If something suspicious is found during your self-inspection, it is time to make a dental appointment.

How to Give a Self-Exam
•  Stand before a mirror with a good light that allows you to see the entire mouth
•  Inspect all areas of your mouth, including your tongue, gum line, teeth and cheeks
•  Look for any obvious bumps, lumps or patches that do not look right

After you inspect for the obvious, you will need to look for more inconspicuous areas in your mouth that will require a little more inspection.
•  If you see a brown line along the gum line, it could be an excessive buildup of tartar
•  Is your tongue coated in a white layer? This could be a sign of bad breath which is a symptom of gum disease, or it could be a sign of candidiasis, which is an overgrowth of yeast in the mouth
•  Are your gums red and puffy? This is another sign of gum disease and should be inspected right away
•  If your gums are pale in color, you have a burning sensation on your tongue or mouth, or tongue redness and swelling, this could be an iron or vitamin B deficiency
•  A shiny or bald looking tongue could be a sign of a vitamin deficiency

It should take you under one minute to thoroughly inspect your mouth. If you see any of the above signs, it is best to get an appointment right away, rather than waiting and letting the issues become worse.
