How To Save Time and Money at the Dentist

"An ounce of prevention is worth a pound of cure."
The old saying is true. Practicing daily preventative dental care through good oral hygiene can help stop potentially painful, expensive, and worrisome dental conditions before they start.

The result of good oral hygiene is a mouth that looks, feels, and smells healthy. This means that:
1.  Your teeth are clean and free from food residue and heavy plaque.
2.  Your gums are pale pink and do not hurt or bleed.
3.  You do not constantly struggle with bad breath.

Good oral health is usually a matter of consistently maintaining good habits. The following simple steps can significantly decrease your risk of developing cavities, gum disease, and other dental concerns:
1.  Brush twice a day and floss daily.
2.  Eat a healthy balanced diet and limit snacking.
3.  Use fluoride toothpaste.
4.  Use additional fluoride products, such as mouthwash, if your dentist says you need it.
5.  Make sure that children under age 12 drink fluoridated water or take supplemental fluoride if they drink well water or live in a non-fluoridated area.
6.  Quit using tobacco in any form. Tobacco use increases your risk of oral cancer, gum disease and tooth decay. It also stains your teeth and can contribute to bad breath.
7.  Examine your own mouth regularly and alert your dentist as soon as possible to any changes of concern such as swollen gums, chipped teeth, discolored teeth, and sores on your cheeks, gums, and tongue. Typically, the earlier a problem is detected, the simpler it is to treat.
8.  Visit your dentist regularly, not just when you have a toothache. Getting a dental checkup at least twice a year will keep your oral health program on track and avoid having problems "pile up." People with certain conditions may need to come more frequently. Follow the recommendation that your dentist or hygienist has set for you.
