Do you Know how to Recognize Gum Disease?

Did you know that you could have gum disease and not even know it? In its earliest stages, gum disease does not provide many recognizable symptoms, making it difficult to see it right away. Unfortunately, gum disease is only treatable in its earliest stages, which is why it is necessary to know what to look for as well as to get treatment as soon as possible.

•  Do your gums bleed after you brush them? Even the slightest tint of blood in your toothpaste can be a sign of inflamed gums.
•  Do your gums suddenly feel tender to the touch or feel more sensitive when you eat?
•  Do you have sudden and chronic bad breath?
•  Do your teeth feel loose, or as if they have shifted, even the slightest bit?
•  Do your teeth suddenly look longer?

If you answered yes to any of these questions, you could be suffering from gum disease. While it is important to get treatment as early as possible, if you have an advanced form of gum disease, it does not mean that you are going to lose your teeth. Getting treatment as soon as you discover these signs will allow us to come up with the appropriate treatment plan. Treatment could include scaling and root planing, medications or surgical treatments including flap surgery or bone and tissue grafting.

In order to prevent gum disease, it is important to brush your teeth at least twice per day and floss once. It is also vital that you keep your dental appointments every six months to allow us to determine if any changes have occurred in your gums, and if so, we can treat the issues early.
