Why you Should Convince your Teen to Forgo Oral Piercings
While oral piercings might seem "cool" for some teens, their potential problems greatly outweigh their benefits. Aside from the commonly known issues with these piercings including the risk of infection and damage to teen's teeth, there are other hazards. . The risks for prolonged bleeding or loss of feeling in the tongue, airway obstructions and the risk for hepatitis can pose to be very serious issues for anyone considering oral piercings.

Bleeding and Numbness

The tongue has numerous blood vessels, which can easily become punctured during piercing. Most piercings are not done by a medical professional, which puts teens in danger for prolonged bleeding. If a nerve is pierced or punctured during the procedure, a teen can lose feeling in their tongue, which could cause a multitude of problems with speech and the ability to eat.

Airway Obstructions

Any type of piercing is not permanent and can easily become loose. If a tongue or cheek piercing comes loose without being noticed, it can easily be swallowed. If this occurs, the jewelry can pose a choking hazard as well as cause damage to the respiratory or digestive organs.

Bloodborne Hepatitis

Bloodborne hepatitis includes Hepatitis B, C, and D and has been recognized by the National Institute of Health as being transmitted by piercings, especially oral piercings. Bloodborne diseases, such as Hepatitis can settle in fast because they are transmitted by the blood and can manifest very quickly.
