Scaling and Root Planing - What Does that Mean?

Scaling and Root Planing - Dentist Marietta, GAIf it has been suggested that you treat your gum disease with scaling and root planing, you might find yourself confused or even worried. The good news is that this is a very common procedure and it can help to prevent your gum disease from progressing any further. It is the least invasive procedure available to fight gum disease and when the follow-up instructions are properly followed, it can be very successful.

A Deep Cleaning

In simple terms, scaling and root planing is a deep cleaning of your teeth. It requires that you be numb, and the hygienist removes the diseased tissue and bacteria along the roots, helping to minimize the pockets that your gums have obtained as a result of the gum disease.

Using Antibiotics

If the pockets in your gums are very severe, antibiotic gel may be placed in the pockets to help fight the disease. The antibiotics serve as a preventative tool to avoid the infection from becoming worse as well as a way to increase the healing time for the gum tissue.

The Importance of After Care

Once you have scaling and root planing performed, it is vital that you keep up on your home care. Taking extra care to brush and floss at least twice per day will help to avoid the disease from progressing further and causing tooth or bone loss. In addition, it is important to avoid smoking as tobacco can cause gum disease to become worse as well.
