Do You Have Receding Gums?

Smile with teeth that aren't recedingIf you have ever noticed that someone has a rather 'toothy' smile, you have witnessed receding gums. When gums begin to pull away from the teeth, due to infection or other issues, you begin to see much more of the teeth than should be visible. As the receding becomes worse, pockets form, allowing an area for the bacteria in your mouth to settle, causing your gum disease to progress. Receding gums happen gradually, but there are some early warning signs for you to know:

•  Sensitivity to hot and cold foods: Your gums protect the roots of your teeth. As they begin receding, the roots become more visible and are able to touch hot and cold foods, which can be rather painful for you.
•  Teeth look longer: If you look in the mirror one day and notice that your teeth suddenly appear longer, it is not that they grew, it is that your gums are pulling away from your teeth.
•  Food getting stuck in odd places: If food is suddenly becoming lodged between your tooth and the gum line, chances are a pocket has developed and your gums are receding.
•  Bad breath: Your breath is a good indicator when something is wrong in your mouth. If you find that you have breath that cannot be controlled via your standard methods, it could be a sign of receding gums and/or gum disease.

If you suspect that you have receding gums, it is time to call us for an appointment to determine how much recession has occurred and what the appropriate treatment option is for you.
