If you enter the supermarket toothpaste aisle and your head starts spinning, you are not alone. The marketing tactics used by companies and the dizzying options available can make it difficult to determine which toothpaste is right for you. To make things a little easier for you, there are two areas that you should focus; the toothpaste should be approved by the ADA and contain fluoride – it's that simple.
Why do you Need the ADA Seal?
The American Dental Association has been around for more than 70 years and only awards its "Seal of Acceptance" to those products that pass their stringent standards. The ADA has its own staff of scientists and consultants that effectively test products to ensure that they meet the standards of the ADA. Relying on this symbol can make shopping easier and save your dental health from harm.
Why do you Need Fluoride?
Fluoride is necessary in order to reduce your risk of getting cavities. Unfortunately, most people do not get enough of it from water alone. Fluoridated toothpaste helps the enamel on your teeth to become stronger by resisting acid that is released from the bacteria in foods that contain sugar.
Beyond the ADA seal and fluoride, you will be faced with other choices, including those for sensitive teeth, whitening and tartar control. These factors are a matter of personal preference and can be chosen based on the needs of you and your family.
