What Does your Jaw Pain Mean?

If you suffer from chronic jaw pain, it is time to come in for an appointment. Pain in the jaw encompasses a variety of symptoms - pain in any area of the face, around the ear, chronic headaches and tenderness when you touch your jaw. For some people the pain is constant, while others only experience pain while chewing or talking. When you visit our office for jaw pain, we will conduct a thorough exam to determine which of the following, if any, of these issues you are experiencing.

•  Tooth abscess &ndash
•  An infection in your tooth or gum could be radiating to your jaw causing the sensitivity or pain
•  Sinus Issues &ndash
•  Sometimes jaw pain has nothing to do with your teeth at all, but can be an issue with your sinuses such as an infection
•  Grinding teeth &ndash
•  Your teeth can be inspected for signs of grinding, which can cause the muscles in your jaw to tense up and become sore throughout the day. This can also be affiliated with TMD-temporomandibular joint disorder, a condition affecting the jaw joint
•  Gum disease &ndash
•  Gingivitis and periodontitis can cause eventual pain in the jaw, especially when left untreated for long periods of time
•  Damage from an injury &ndash
•  Car accidents, sporting accidents and any type of fall can cause secondary issues in your mouth, even if your mouth was not directly impacted

Having a thorough examination of your mouth, teeth and jaws will help to uncover why you are suffering from chronic jaw pain. Once we get to the root of the problem, we can proceed with the necessary treatment to alleviate your discomfort .
